Power cut or fibre cut? How to tell before you send a van
Three quick checks can save a wasted trip.
By the Autoprator team. Updated .
Many ONUs dropping together can mean a cut cable or a power failure in the area. They need very different responses, and only one needs a technician.
Check for a dying gasp
Most ONUs send a last message when they lose power. If many report it together, power is the likely cause.
Check the area
Does the drop match one neighbourhood or one power feed? Does it line up with planned power work? A cut follows the cable, and a power failure follows the grid.
Wait a few minutes
ONUs that come back by themselves were almost certainly waiting for power. A fibre fault stays down until someone repairs it.
